Architecture and Art

Like a triptych unfolding over the ochre tapestry of Mallorca, the architecture here does not seek to dominate the landscape, but to order it into a sequence of gazes and silences. Three volumes stand as witnesses to a constant duality: the intimate versus the shared, the protection of the wall versus the vastness of the horizon. It is an exercise in balance where matter becomes the language and transition spaces are transformed into the transparent hinges that articulate the ritual of inhabiting.

In the municipality of Muro, specifically in the area of Es Moians, we find ourselves in a landscape that breathes the transition between the nearby coastal breeze and the aridity of the island's interior, an environment where nature manifests with a Mediterranean and austere resilience.

The intervention sits on a plot that houses a plantation of olive trees. The environment is an ode to the resilience of the local flora, which draws a perennial green tapestry that coexists with the ephemeral burst of the rockroses in spring. The house integrates into a landscape that changes with the seasons, from the vibrant aridity of summer to the spectacle of the almond blossom in the first months of the year.

The project stems from a desire for fragmented organization, articulating through three differentiated volumes intertwined by transition links. These spaces, acting as glass and iron joints, not only link the rooms but also manage the geometric tension of the angles, allowing light and landscape to penetrate the points of union. The project is conceived as a duality of "worlds": a central public core flanked by two private wings, establishing a dynamic balance between shared life and seclusion.

The architectural narrative materializes through a tectonic contrast that defines the character of each volume. The lateral bodies, dedicated to the private area, are coated in earth-toned stucco that seeks to blend in with the chromaticism of the surrounding geological stratum. In contrast, the central volume, the public soul of the house, rises with walls clad in marès stone. This stone, deliberately imperfect and rough, carries its whitish and earthy texture to the interior and exterior, elevating traditional construction to a contemporary language. The mono-pitch roofs and vaulted ceilings pay homage to old vernacular buildings, providing an interior spatiality of great height.

The functional program is clearly distributed following the logic of the volumes. The left wing houses the secondary rooms with their respective bathrooms. The central module, the heart of the house, contains the living room, kitchen, and dining room spaces that expand toward the exterior as well as a laundry facing the front patio. Finally, the volume on the right, the most secluded of the three, is reserved for the master suite, which features a walk-in closet, bathroom, and a large opening that allows one to wake up facing the immensity of the landscape.

This project does not intend to impose itself on the plain of Es Moians, but to be part of its ecosystem. Through the use of stone, glass, and light, the house becomes a threshold between tradition and modernity. An architecture that finds its meaning in the contemporary interpretation of the place, a refuge that closes itself off to the world to open, with serenity, to nature.
